Artist Statement
I create paintings that drip rich with color, filled with excitement and curiosity. The paintings are figurative and capture a secret moment or a curious action that another might be fascinated to see or possibly embarrassed to stumble upon.
The images are created in a simple, sometimes realistic style. Details of the pictures begin to emerge that are questionable or seem out of place, holding the attention of the viewer. One intention is to share esoteric information and open up ideas of what could be. This communication of ideas flows through the static images on canvas to create a dynamic sense of environments. As the viewers’ attention sinks into the imagined scenario, the emotions and intentions painted on canvas combine with the viewer. I intend for these visions and energies to become pieces of a future in the observers’ life. They are my experiences with metaphors switched between objects to begin questioning the confidence of the unknowingly agreed to and accepted. Most of the canvases average a 20”x30” format and are of mixed media (oils, acrylics, charcoal, and pastels). Colors in the foreground are rich and saturated offset by a diffused background.
Images in my body of work are united by curiosity and exploration. This adventure looks at collections of objects, inquisitive figures and groups, and compositions of harmonizing colors. Many times, the complete images come to me as a revelation. The work in this case is quickly recorded to be as true to the vision as possible. This other-worldly information is much of the substance of the imagery, even if it is described with natural objects.
I encourage the viewer to question assumptions, and connect with another’s thoughts. The opposing ideas and objects that are put side by side on my canvases help to show a range of possibilities rather than “a truth.” This newness of familiar objects put out of accepted context helps to see with fresh eyes. Breaking with the meaning of objects leaves an open space to begin with a new creation.
